Pepcid

Cost: $25

IV Pepcid is the intravenous form of famotidine, a non-drowsy H₂ (histamine-2) blocker that reduces stomach acid. Given by IV for quick absorption, it’s used for short-term relief of heartburn, acid reflux (GERD), gastritis irritation, and ulcer-related discomfort. It can also be used under clinician direction as an adjunct in certain histamine-related reactions alongside other medications.

How IV Pepcid Works

Pepcid blocks H₂ receptors in the stomach’s parietal cells, reducing acid production. Less acid means less irritation of the esophagus and stomach lining, so burning, pressure, and nausea from acid can settle quickly. Many people feel improvement within 15–60 minutes, and acid control typically lasts 10–12 hours.

Benefits At A Glance

Rapid relief of heartburn and reflux discomfort

  • Non-drowsy, non-opioid option
  • Helps protect the stomach lining, especially useful when other meds (e.g., NSAIDs) are used
  • Can be paired with IV hydration, anti-nausea support (e.g., Zofran), or electrolytes when appropriate

What IV Pepcid Helps

  • Acid reflux/GERD and burning in the chest or throat
  • Gastritis irritation and sour stomach
  • Ulcer-related discomfort (short-term symptom control)
  • Adjunct management of histamine-mediated reactions (provider-directed)

Safety & Who Should Avoid It

IV Pepcid is generally well tolerated, but it may not be appropriate if you have:

  • Allergy to famotidine or other H₂ blockers
  • Significant kidney impairment (dose adjustment often required)
  • Prior QT-prolongation/arrhythmia or on meds that affect heart rhythm (provider will review)
  • Pregnancy/breastfeeding: discuss risks/benefits with your clinician

Medication considerations: Famotidine can affect absorption of medicines that require stomach acid (e.g., certain antifungals). Tell your provider about all prescriptions, OTCs, and supplements.

Dosage of IV Pepcid

Your clinician will tailor dosing to your needs. A common adult dose is 20 mg IV, which may be repeated every 12 hours if needed in monitored settings. IV administration is short-term; many clients transition to oral options once symptoms are controlled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not exactly. Pepcid is an H₂ blocker—it reduces acid production rather than neutralizing acid like chewable antacids.

Relief often starts in 15–60 minutes and may last 10–12 hours.

Possibly, but don’t layer multiple acid reducers (e.g., another H₂ blocker or PPI) unless your provider directs you. Chewable antacids may be used separately for breakthrough symptoms if advised.

It can indirectly ease nausea when acid irritation is the cause. For primary nausea, your provider may pair Pepcid with an anti-nausea medication.
